In my previous posts, I dyed various items of 100% cotton with natural dyes. In this post, I used 5mm 3-ply cotton rope by Yarn Bee that I bought at Hobby Lobby. It took two 40-yard skeins, which at only $4.99 per roll, was very reasonable.
The brown cords were dyed with strong coffee, and the yellow cords were dyed with onion skin for varying dye times and amounts of skin. The white cords are left as they were at the store.
I also made all of the beads on it with polymer clay, so that:
1: I could make my own custom colors, and
2: so that I could make the holes big enough for the cords to fit through without a struggle!
I found the stick outside on the ground, which I heated in a 200 degree oven for 30 minutes to kill any insect larvae hiding in it! I always do this step for natural materials I find outside, such as pine cones, seed pods, etc.
I really enjoyed the result of my efforts and have a nice decorative item for my home! The photos are step-by-step.
