Here is a macrame skein holder and dispenser that you can make from a scrap piece of wood and a piece of dowel rod. Make sure you leave enough length of dowel for the depth of the hole as well as a little bit to stick up above the height of the skein as is the photos below. Use a hammer or mallet to tap it or hammer it into the hole. It should fit snug.
Note: You shouldn't need to glue in the dowel if the hole is slightly smaller than the dowel, but if the hole ends up too big, you can simply use wood glue to glue it in.
Additional supplies: hammer, drill and bit slightly smaller than the size of the dowel, hand saw
Now I can just pull off the length of cord I need without the skein falling to the floor!
