I had some purple plaid and bat-themed houndstooth 100% cotton fabric on-hand and decided to make a purse from a pattern that I'd made the 'Mushroom Purse' from, shown below, that I made a few years back!
This time, however, I wanted a cross-body instead of a shoulder bag, so I added two extra rectangle-shaped lengths of fabric to the ends of the existing pattern pieces. I kept things simple and just used my existing pattern piece as my cutting guide so they'd be the same width. I also cut interfacing and lining pieces the same size and shape.
I then simply straight-stitched them onto the handle part of my pattern piece and voila! I made a cross-body bag! My photos are from after I cut and sewed the outer shell and the lining pieces. I've also included a photo of the pattern package.
Lastly, I added the outside pocket with the decorative buttons on my own. I felt the purse needed some extra interest. The houndstooth shape is sewn on all four sides and the actual pocket is the purple piece, which is open at the top. The buttons are strictly decorative and are not functioning in any way, although one could make it a closeable pocket if desired. See pics below!
